Feynman’s “Cargo Cult Science” speech still feels uncomfortable because it is not really about pseudoscience outside the laboratory.

It is about the ways serious people can fool themselves inside it.

Richard Feynman compared bad science to people building fake runways, fake control towers, and fake headphones, hoping cargo planes would land. The form is there. The rituals are there. But the mechanism that actually makes the thing work is missing.

That is the part that hits hardest.

You can have equations, citations, instruments, conferences, and impressive language and still not be doing science in the deepest sense.

In his 1974 Caltech address, later published as “Cargo Cult Science,” Feynman argued that the first duty of a scientist is not intelligence, confidence, or elegance.

It is honesty with oneself.

His warning remains one of the most brutal sentences in science:

“The first principle is that you must not fool yourself and you are the easiest person to fool.”

For me, that is the real lesson. Science is not protected by its vocabulary. It is protected by the discipline of not pretending to know more than we actually know.

My Dad saw Europe at its worst in Italy in WW2. He still fell in love with it. When I was old enough each summer he packed our Austin with my Mum, me, a tent, tins of baked beans, PG Tips and showed me all its countries and languages

@Le_Turbomachine @sierramike67 @BB27000 Exactement. L’abandon du nom TGV était une immense connerie. Il y a fort à parier qu’il subsistera au-delà d’Inoui ou de Ouigo. D’ailleurs le marketing SNCF a été déjà obligé de rétro pédaler et d’écrire « TGV Inoui » et « TGV Ouigo » sur le site SNCF Connect
