@hirotonfa One thing to add on is schooners (fore and aft rigged ships invented in colonial Massachusetts btw) are able to sail closer to the eye because they are propelled by lift. Here's a pic of our sails and you can see it resembles a vertical wing.
@moriko38 Many sailors have the Line Crossing Ceremony when a ship crosses the equator. They have shellbacks (those who've crossed before) dress up and hold a court to judge polywogs (sailors who've never crossed). The polywogs often have harsh punishments. Its still a thing today.
