I genuinely think it’s basically hopeless to try to “educate” foreigners on China by helping them visit the country and so on. It’s costly, time-consuming, most times shallow and counterproductive. Potemkin village tours really work, whether it’s Soviet Union in 20s and 30s, Maoist China in 70s, or Xi’s China today.

Instead, it’s much easier to just make use of the countless Chinese individuals already abroad, they know China well enough and speak English fine. The systematic disempowerment and voicelessness of liberal Chinese nationals in the global China field, who are actually culturally and ideologically rather well aligned with western liberal values broadly speaking, is a waste, atrocity and scandal.

今天的海外政治学学生的精神面貌已经发生质的变化，很多学校都是如此。留学生们早已不再是怀着批判思维去看待中国，更多的是成长于特权阶层和民族主义时代，用研究对国家体制表达理解与同情，如果找到独特的数据库，偶尔甚至是支持和捍卫。

当然，还是感谢这位同学把一些像“信息控制”这样的概念和理论带进了墙内，即使以一种扭曲的方式。我没看原帖，听说评论区都是附和的，也很正常了。或许这就是今天的互联网基本盘。但无论何时，在时代洪流面前，我都会继续坚定地螳臂挡车。
