A special night at the @EarthshotPrize last night seeing the City of @Bogota win this year’s Earthshot Prize to Clean Our Air! 🌎
Congratulations to Mayor @CarlosFGalan and previous mayors for their leadership in cutting #AirPollution by investing in better public transport and cycle infrastructure for their 8 million residents.
As part of #BreatheCities, Bogotá is expanding the city’s air quality monitoring network, reducing toxic emissions from road transport and construction machinery, and developing the city's first Clean Air Zone (ZUMA) ⤵️
Cities are leading the way in showing that it’s possible to clean the air, fast.
Yesterday we heard from the Mayors driving change across @BreatheCities at our #WMS25 session 👇
- Deputy Mayor Mete Coban MBE on how #London’s bold clean air action has lowered NO2 to safe levels 184 years earlier than projected.
- Mayor Trzakowski on how #Warsaw has eliminated 90% of coal ‘smoker’ stoves for domestic heating, driving healthier homes.
- Mayor Galan (Alcaldía Mayor de Bogotá) shared #Bogota’s plans to expand their electric bus fleet, and declare a second clean air zone - action that has seen them recognised as an #EarthshotPrize finalist.
- Mayor Dada Morero reflected on how #Johannesburg has partnered with over 1,000 of the city's young people to drive awareness around tackling dirty air, together.
- Mayor Vassil Terziev highlighted how residents in #Sofia are switching to cleaner heating methods, protecting public health and lowering bills.
I loved moderating this panel and left energised and optimistic after hearing from these Mayors alongside the wonderful @sabrodrigues61, @anthawilliams and @DrMariaNeira.
With deep thanks to @BloombergDotOrg for the vision and support in making #BreatheCities possible, and to @c40cities for our partnership in turning ambition into action across our cities.

I’m in Rio for the @BloombergDotOrg & @COP30 #LocalLeaders Forum & @c40cities #WMS25.
Excited to meet with mayors & city leaders that are showcasing how local leadership on issues like #AirPollution is driving progress towards meeting global climate goals.
In Rio - as part of the @BreatheCities initiative - under Mayor @eduardopaes the city is taking action to clean the air. Low-cost air quality sensors paint a clearer picture of the problem, electric bus fleets will green public transport & the city is developing a Low Emission District - the first of its kind in Brazil.
Ahead of #COP30, cities like Rio are showing what progress is possible. Learn more 👇 #BreatheCities
Today, downtown Rio came alive for Festival Respira Rio, giving residents a look at Brazil’s first Low Emission District, set to tackle air pollution head-on. 🚗💨

Reflecting on an incredible week in Colombia! 🚴🍃🤝
It was a privilege to spend more time in this beautiful country and connect with so many of the people driving the clean air movement.
A few highlights:
🌎 In Medellín, I met with Environment Secretary Marcela Ruiz Saldarriaga @AlcaldiadeMed and officials from @Areametropol (Medellín's metropolitan area) to hear how the city is tackling environmental health challenges. We had an energising tour of @UdeA, and I heard from the team at @lasmariasalaire about their work to raise awareness about #AirPollution and mobilise the public.
💨 In Bogotá, I joined @ClaudiaDiazAco1 (@SectorMovilidad) to discuss the city's green transport agenda and met the Environment Secretariat to discuss super pollutants - powerful climate forcers that provide a vital opportunity to cut global warming and protect health at the same time.
🚍 Most inspiring was meeting partners delivering solutions on the ground - from Bogotá’s women-led electric bus company (@LaRolitaBog, learn more: https://t.co/XZxxhcdcga) to those implementing ZUMA, the city’s Clean Air Zone.
With three Breathe Cities here in Latin America already leading the way - and Brazil preparing to host COP30 later in the year, the region is fast becoming a hotbed of clean air innovation.
A huge thank you to all our hosts and partners who made this visit possible: @ManTrujillo, Santiago Morales, @jaimepumarejo, Sandra Fajardo, @WRIColombia, @Movilizatorio, @osarmien_
From Mexico City to Rio de Janeiro, cities across Latin America are leading the way in reducing #AirPollution and greenhouses gases together, demonstrating the vital role urban leadership plays in securing healthier, more sustainable environments.
In Bogotá, one of our @BreatheCities, progress is already underway. The city's Clean Air Zone (ZUMA) aims to benefit the people who are most affected by toxic air, and Mayor @CarlosFGalan is taking bold steps to modernise transport and encourage the shift to zero-emission vehicles. 🚍🌱
Great to be back in Colombia, connecting with partners tackling one of the country’s biggest challenges: air pollution.
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of visiting the impressive team at Medellín’s @UdeA, whose research underpins the city’s #AirQuality initiatives. The lab I visited has pioneered testing emissions from motorbikes - which make up 60% of the city’s vehicles and account for 15% of its emissions.
The team tested 70 different motorbike models across various ages and driving cycles. The resulting data feeds into the national emissions inventory and could support improvements in motorbike efficiency - an important step towards ensuring residents' primary transport mode doesn’t cost their health and the environment.
Two years since Breathe Cities was announced, we’re celebrating bold city action to cut pollution and protect public health. Together, we can address the global air pollution crisis. 🌍💨
#LCAW2025#BreatheCities
