this image singlehandedly ruined console discussion what do you meeean not wanting to get spoiled before the game even comes out is considered defending the company now
That region trick doesn't work anymore, though. I've heard from others and attempted it myself, and it doesn't work anymore. I'm pretty sure Microsoft updated a region lock unless it's only for certain games that I'm not aware of..
He is, of course, right here. An entire generation of moviegoers have been trained on the idea a movie only matters if it sets up other movies and that is sad.
Variety hates covering superhero movies, it doesn’t matter if it’s Marvel or DC. They hate the genre and want it to go away because they only want to cover Oscar bait.
For context not discussed below, on August 1st, XBOX prices went up across the board, which of course would depress sales in the future. None of that is surprising and was completely expected.
For reference: Xbox Series X (1TB) with optical drive launched at $499. It's now $799.
Consoles, PC/laptops, and phones are *all* down 20% YoY because of the RAM/NAND shortage and consequential price hikes.
The crashout is absolutely hilarious to me - of course, there are going to be bitches like this account who go out of their way to find ways to make DC succeeding somehow look bad. I do not know what this brand has done to this individual but WOW. #Clayface#ClayfaceMovie#DCU
I'm starting to wonder if Sony is going to flex its marketing deal to put pressure on Rockstar to ask Microsoft to take action against users who take a virtual trip to New Zealand in order to play GTA 6 nine hours earlier on XBOX.
XBOX knows people do that, and people have been doing it since the Xbox One days, but they never do anything to anyone who does it.
But with the "Plays Best on PlayStation" marketing in full swing, Rockstar might try to get XBOX to take actions on accounts that "Play First on XBOX."
Sony paid to keep the Xbox logo off GTA 6's big launch trailer and its first TV ad. Pre-orders are still splitting almost exactly the way they would have anyway.
Right now it's about 74% PS5 and 26% Xbox, based on Sensor Tower's estimates of digital pre-orders. PlayStation owns roughly 73% of the current consoles out there. So all that marketing money moved the needle by about one point.
It actually went the wrong direction for Sony during the loudest stretch. Xbox was at 23% of pre-orders in August and it's at 26% now. Matthew Ball, Xbox's chief strategy officer, said last month that their share of GTA 6 pre-orders was tracking their share of the console market, and the numbers line up with him almost perfectly.
Which makes sense once you think about who pre-orders a video game. It's somebody who already has a PS5 or an Xbox sitting under the TV. They picked that console years ago, and their copy of GTA 6 is going on that box no matter whose logo shows up at the end of a trailer.
Sony was going after a different crowd. The PS5 and Xbox Series consoles have sold about 130 million units combined. The PS4 and Xbox One sold 175 million over their lifetimes, and millions of those older machines are still plugged in somewhere. GTA 6 won't run on any of them.
Picture one of those people watching a Knicks game when the GTA 6 spot comes on, and the only logo at the end says PlayStation. They probably don't follow Xbox on X, so they'll never see the Xbox version of the ending that went up a week later. When they walk into a store in November to buy something that plays GTA 6, Sony wants exactly one console already in their head.
And the payoff keeps going long after launch day. Sony takes roughly a 30% cut of every digital game sold on its store, so on a single $79.99 copy of GTA 6 that's about $24, and a household that switches over keeps paying that cut on every game it buys until the PS6 shows up.
Sony spent its money on people who will never show up in a pre-order chart, because they don't own a new console yet.
