🔴 Kings of Famine: How Gaza’s starvation was turned into a $1B business
An investigation by @MadaMasr reveals how Israel engineered a monopolized supply system for Gaza during the war, using hunger to create a lucrative industry controlled by a network of Israeli-approved Palestinian importers and Egyptian power brokers.
After October 2023, Israel restricted all commercial imports into Gaza to a small number of Palestinian companies holding Israeli permits. These firms did not import goods themselves. Instead, they acted as gatekeepers, charging Gaza traders enormous “coordination fees” simply to secure Israeli approval. This system, known locally as “goods coordination,” eliminated competition and drove prices to extreme levels.
On the Egyptian side, Sinai businessman Ibrahim al-Argany and his company ‘Sons of Sinai’ controlled storage, transport, and access at Rafah. As aid trickled in under international pressure, commercial goods were deliberately favored over free humanitarian aid. Israel classified everything as “aid,” inflating its statistics while allowing traders to sell food at prices most Palestinians could not afford.
When Israel later banned private imports, the trade continued anyway. Commercial goods were relabeled as humanitarian aid through forged paperwork and informal arrangements involving aid organizations and border officials. By late 2024, a majority of “aid trucks” were carrying commercial goods sold for profit.
As Gaza’s police and aid systems were systematically dismantled by Israel, a new market emerged: securing food trucks. Armed groups and private security companies — most notably Aqsa, tied to Argany’s business network — charged tens of thousands of dollars per truck to protect shipments. These costs were passed directly to consumers.
By 2025, coordination and security fees had generated over $1 billion, while food prices rose more than 1,000%. The investigation shows famine in Gaza was not accidental, but the product of deliberate control, enforced scarcity, and organized profiteering under Israeli supervision.

After the ceasefire, why can’t most Gazans return home?
Around two months into the ceasefire agreement, the majority remain displaced. Hundreds of thousands of homes have been destroyed or severely damaged, leaving families exposed to winter storms. Fragile tents collapse under rain and wind, while #Israel’s genocide continues and the destruction of homes goes on
