Manchaca Fire Rescue / Travis County ESD 5 is one of 13 Emergency Services Districts serving Travis County residents. Manchaca Fire Rescue began in 1968 as an all-volunteer fire department. Since 2015, we have been a fully paid, tax-funded political subdivision; a first responder organization, responding to over 1,500 incidents per year, covering the southernmost portion of Travis County, between I-35 and 45SW Toll, and from Slaughter Lane to the Hays County line. **RED FLAG WARNING** The National Weather Service in Austin/San Antonio has issued a Red Flag Warning from Sunday afternoon through Monday evening for wind and low relative humidity.
WINDS.: West 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 35 mph Sunday afternoon becoming North 20 to 35 mph with gusts of 45 to 55 mph Sunday evening into Sunday night.
Any fire that develops will catch and spread rapidly. A burn ban is in effect for Travis County. All outdoor burning is prohibited.

WHAT...Light to moderate accumulations of mainly ice and sleet are likely across the region late Friday night through Sunday morning.

In addition, dangerously cold temperatures are expected Saturday night through Monday morning.

WHERE...Northern portions of south central Texas.

WHEN...From late Friday night through Sunday morning.

IMPACTS...Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Ice accumulation on power lines and tree limbs may cause power outages. Extreme cold will become life threatening and likely damage unprotected pipes and put livestock at risk.

Keep combustible items at least 3 feet away from space heaters and only use heaters with safety tip over switches.

.Gusty north winds and dry air along with increasing fire danger will lead to critical fire weather conditions across all of south central Texas on Saturday.

The National Weather Service in Austin/San Antonio has issued a Red Flag Warning for wind and low relative humidity, which is in effect from 10 AM to 8 PM CST Saturday.

* AFFECTED AREA...All of south central Texas.

* TIMING...From 10 AM to 8 PM CST Saturday.

* WINDS...North to Northeast 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.

* RELATIVE HUMIDITY...As low as 13 percent.

* IMPACTS...Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly.

A burn ban remains in effect for Travis County. All outdoor burning is prohibited.

We want to wish everyone a safe and Happy New Year.

Every year, thousands of people, most often children and teens, are injured while using consumer fireworks. Despite the dangers of fireworks, few people understand the associated risks - devastating burns, other injuries, fires, and even death.

Fireworks start over 25,000 fires every year, including 3,760 structure fires, 849 vehicle fires, 27,252 outside fires, and 441 unclassified fires in 2023 alone. These fires caused an estimated 15 civilian deaths, 58 civilian injuries and $142 million in direct property damage. (Note: Totals may not equal sums because of rounding).

In 2023, U.S hospital emergency rooms treated an estimated 9,700 people for fireworks related injuries; a 1-month special study period between June 16, 2023 and July 16, 2023 found that nearly half of the fireworks-related injuries treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments were to the extremities (35% hands and fingers, 8% legs, 5% arms) and 22% were to the head, face, and ears.

Only 11% of the fireworks fires were structure fires but these incidents accounted for 77% of the civilian deaths, 83% of the civilian injuries, and 88% of the direct property damage.

Children younger than 15 years of age accounted for 32% of the estimated 2023 injuries. These injury estimates were obtained or derived from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s 2023 Fireworks Annual Report.

Although it is lifted, a FREE permit is required; apply online at https://t.co/NLFgQf3jrz (Read Information Bulletin 003: Outdoor Burn Permit Process and Rules before you apply). We will conduct a site inspection of the burn site before issuing your permit, which is valid for 1 year. Permits are automatically suspended during a burn ban or Red Flag Day.
