Reporter Sri TSN: In the movie 'Thiruvarutchelvar' you had acted in the role of Appar, the scenes of which are indelible in our minds. You had mentioned earlier that the inspiration for this role was Kanchi Paramacharya! Can you please elaborate?

Sivaji Ganesan: I have stressed this fact that an actor must have lot of observation powers to succeed in acting. I usually am a good observer of my environment, the people surrounding me etc. When I acted as Appar, I had to display the attributes of an old devotee of Lord Shiva, his appearance, dress etc.

One day I was informed by Shankara Matham that Swamigal had asked me to come and have His darshan. That time He was staying in the Matham in Mylapore. If I remember right, the Matham was next to Karpagambal Wedding Hall.

I, my mother, my father, my wife, we all four went to have His darshan. When we reached the Matham they asked us to sit inside a room. We must have been there for an hour. Kanchi Swamigal was giving a discourse that time. Then all of a sudden there was power cut and it became dark.

Swamigal, with a lighted lamp in His Hand, came slowly walking by, looking for us.

He sat down slowly, kept His hands above His eyes and looked at us!

"You are Sivaji Ganesan, right?!” He said.

"Yes Master, I am!” I replied and prostrated to Him by falling on the floor and got His blessings. My wife and my parents also prostrated to Him.

"I am very happy to have met you all!” said He.

Continuing He said:

"When I went to temples like Tirupati, Thiruvanaikka, Punnainallur Mariamman Temple in Thanjavur, the temple authorities in those places made an elephant garland for me! I asked them who presented the elephants to the temple.

And they replied, "Sivaji Ganesan!"

There are many rich people in the country. For the sake of publicity they donate money to temples. But to donate an elephant to the temples, one must posses a generous mind. You have it!"

"Therefore, your parents are fortunate people to have given birth to you. I will pray to God for your parents' sake!"

Saying these words, Swamigal got up and went inside.

"Just think how elated I must have felt that time! What an incredible anugraham! Just think about it!” exulted Sivaji to the reporter!

Generally speaking I have no fears in Life. Especially when I have Swamigal's Anugraham why should I fear anything at all!

It is possible that this incident got etched in my mind. I have observed the mannerisms of Swamigal keenly. Perhaps that is why it got reflected in my role as Appar in that movie!"
