Learning about the Church, racism, sexism, other forms of oppression, hatred, abuse, and exclusion. My goal: work for love, healing, and unity in Jesus Christ.
During Lent, I'm journeying through this incredibly helpful book written by a wonderful, wise guide - thank you, @drchanequa ! My husband gave it to me for Valentine's Day. Perfect timing!

I'm writing a research paper on Fannie Lou Hamer for a seminary class, learning a lot, and crying frequently. She endured horrible persecution and opposition, yet she lived a life of integrity and sacrificial love. James and Matthew are Bible books she reminds me of.
Judi Dench was on Graham Norton last night to push her new book about her life and work with Shakespeare. After making the point we quote Shakespeare daily without knowing it, this happened:
I'm presenting a paper on Saturday on the Holy Spirit's empowerment of women in the Bible. I was granted a course release to work on this project. I believe it's so important for us to hear the message of the entire Bible when it comes to the question of women's roles.
@Bryanzfitz I just thought of how one might summarize toxic masculinity and femininity. The first makes strength and idol and weakness a sin, and the second makes weakness an idol and strength a sin. Or something like that.
@Bryanzfitz I also just remembered an article I once read about three "ghosts" that haunt women in the church: the usurper (of authority), the seductress, and the child.
@Bryanzfitz It strikes me as toxic because there is a certain infantile tone to it and a lot of the way scripture is approached is superficial. Not always, mind you, but often. As though women can't learn what men can about the Bible. Or be strong or assertive. Or work alongside men.
@Bryanzfitz Keeping up with beauty standards, always focusing on submission, the threat of the "Jezebel" label, having a Mary heart in a Martha world but still keeping a nice home for hosting, admitting you're a hot mess, having lots of girlfriends to cry with all the time. Girl talk.

And I was shocked to learn how little oversight and accountability Jim Elliot and those other men had in going to the Waorani. What a disaster! And yet they were revered as heroes. We are too easily deceived when we isolate ourselves from sources of wisdom.
Finished this excellent biography today. Had to pace myself and process as I read. As someone who was raised in the culture of white USian evangelicalism, I was both relieved and convicted. We've gotten some things so wrong, some things so right. Other things we've missed.
I remember growing up being fed Elliot's views on marriage, purity, and womanhood. It's extremely toxic stuff she put out there for young people to take in. She meant no harm. She was a victim of lies too. But she and others harmed so many.
