"Women and children" obscures the really vulnerable people in our society(children, elderly, disabled, the sick, etc) & conveys that women are the "weaker sex." While many ppl in those groups are female, it is not their sex that defines their vulnerability.https://t.co/ekgRXRR78l

Minnie Cox, an African American woman, was appointed as postmaster of Indianola, Mississippi, in 1891 during a time of racial tensions. In 1903, due to racial pressure and discrimination, she was forced to resign from her position. In response, President Theodore Roosevelt closed the Indianola post office and redirected its services to a nearby town.
President Roosevelt's decision aimed to send a strong message against racial injustice and to protect the dignity and rights of Minnie Cox. He ensured that she continued to receive her salary during the closure. This incident underscores Roosevelt's commitment to equality and his willingness to take concrete actions to address racial issues during his presidency. Today, the Minnie Cox Post Office in Indianola serves as a reminder of her pioneering role and the historical struggle against racial discrimination.
