A woman who was seven months pregnant was reportedly shot dead in Sugapa, the capital of Intan Jaya Regency in Central Papua Provincial, on Thursday (July 2. 2026) night. The victim, identified as Melkiana Duwitau, died along with her unborn chilf.

According to obtained information, the bullet that struck the victim was allegedly fired from the direction of a military post located about 50 metres from her home in the Jaringan (J2) area Sugapa.

Videos circulating online show the victim being rushed to Intan Jaya Regional General Hospital (RSUD) in Sugapa. However, she succumbed to her injuries despite medical treatment.

The TPNPB Commander of Kodap XVI Yahukimo, Brigadier General Elkius Kobak, said that the shooting of the American pilot in Yahukimo was carried out on his orders, as his side had issued an ultimatum prohibiting all civilian aircraft from entering the operational areas of TPNPB Kodap XVI Yahukimo.

"We also convey to the Government of the United States, through its embassy in Indonesia, and to United Nations member states, that the shooting of the American pilot is a consequence of the failure of the Indonesian, United States, and Dutch Governments, as well as the UN, to address the root causes of the conflict in Papua between the Indonesian military and the West Papua National Liberation Army, which has been ongoing for 64 years," said Brigadier General Elkius Kobak.

Papua police said they were still working to verify the condition of the pilot and the seven passengers.
Spokesperson Yusuf Sutejo said their efforts were complicated by the terrain. There is no road access and it can only be reached by air.

Senny Sambom, TPNPB's spoke person said that civilian aircraft have been used to transport Indonesian military personnel and logistics into Papua’s remote interior. He said the American pilot was killed because the aircraft continued operating despite the group’s warning. The claims could not be independently verified.

But the Indonesian military denied that the plane was used to carry troops. Those on board were seven indigenous Papuan civilians, including three women. They were unharmed, the military said.
