Have India's young protesters found a voice that the Opposition still lacks?
Veteran journalist and author Tavleen Singh (@tavleen_singh) joins Manika Raikwar (@ManikaRaikwar) on DeKoder to discuss the rise of Gen Z protests, how young people are reclaiming nationalism l, and whether a new political force could emerge ahead of the 2029 general election.

Drawing from her debut political novel The Actor, Tavleen speaks about Bollywood's silence, the pressures facing journalists, and the growing influence of political power over democratic institutions. She also discusses Prashant Kishore's political ambitions, Rahul Gandhi's leadership, and why rebuilding the Congress organisation matters more than rebuilding one leader's image.

Can India's Gen Z protesters redefine nationalism?

Journalist and author Tavleen Singh (@tavleen_singh) explains why the youth-led protests have given her hope. She points to the absence of Hindu-Muslim and caste divisions among protesters and argues that young people have reclaimed the language of nationalism from the BJP through the national flag and patriotic slogans.

In conversation with Manika Raikwar (@ManikaRaikwar) Tavleen reflects on what makes this generation's approach to protest different.

Has a new generation found a way to challenge India's political establishment?

Veteran journalist and author Tavleen Singh (@tavleen_singh) sees something different in the young protesters taking to the streets.

But can their momentum translate into political change? And where does that leave the BJP, Congress and India's established opposition?

From the politics of nationalism to the silence of Bollywood, Tavleen joins Manika Raikwar (@ManikaRaikwar) on DeKoder for a conversation that goes well beyond her new novel, The Actor.

Full interview coming soon on DeKoder. Stay tuned.

At 27 and 31, they are both Gen Z by widely accepted definitions. But more importantly since when did generational labels become a matter for judicial determination? Surely the HC has more substantive questions to address than whether someone qualifies as Gen Z!

[sunetra choudhury @sunetrac]

How can any civilised country justify keeping two young men in tihar for more than a week now for doing this?

[Karuna Nundy @karunanundy]

There is no sound legal reason to detain Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka. They must be released immediately.

[Prem Panicker @prempanicker]

Two men who punched a minor girl then dragged her onto the road, continued to hit her, and ripped her t-shirt got bail within 24 hours. Meanwhile, remand extended for two guys who waved the tricolour. 🤷‍♂️

[newslaundry @newslaundry]

Over 7,000 people and 30+ journalists were detained in a day, including three Newslaundry reporters.

But Rubika Liyaquat’s big concern? Detainees getting chai and samosas. How dare anyone insult the kind police!

What on earth is happening in Delhi?

Are even sick children being stopped from getting medical treatment now? 💔

If a child is being prevented from reaching a hospital for treatment, it is a matter of serious concern. Public protests and security arrangements must never come at the cost of an innocent child’s health. What is the child’s fault? The authorities must answer for this

Humanity must come first! 🙏

Despite a sharp MEA response to her original comments, Pramila Jayapal and other US Congress members write to Rubio to raise handling of protests with Indian government during his visit next week, also refer to "transnational repression" by Indian govt

[DeKoder @DeKoderAI]

“We are here to reclaim the right to protest peacefully.” At Delhi's Tiranga March, protesters accuse Delhi Police of illegal detentions and question whether restrictions on demonstrations are intended to protect CEC Gyanesh Kumar.

They also criticise the denotification of Jantar Mantar as a protest site, invoking India's freedom struggle and the Emergency to argue that restrictions will not stop public mobilisation.

Protests are for expressing dissent, seeking accountability.
No one has called for violence.

These are the words of Senior Advocate Vrinda Grover (@vrindagrover), who is among the lawyers fighting cases across courts today to ensure that the right to dissent is not eroded.
Speaking to Dekoder, Vrinda Grover also spoke about the notice issued to actor Imran Khan to leave the country for taking part in protests in Mumbai.
He is an OCI (overseas citizen of India) card holder. Ms Grover said new, onerous conditions have recently been added to OCI forms which “shackle” people from saying anything critical. On the CJP leaders arrested and jailed for trying to unfurl the flag at Jantar Mantar, she asked how flying the flag was a breach of peace?

Should the Election Commission draw from a wider pool than bureaucrats?
Speaking to Manika Raikwar (@ManikaRaikwar), election analyst Dorab R. Sopariwala proposes a broader commission with legal expertise and outside voices, a retired judge at its helm, and a selection process involving the Chief Justice, Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition.

Could a more diverse Election Commission strengthen public trust in India's electoral process?
