I have a feeling the decision to remove Dharmendra Pradhan had already been taken, or at least communicated in principle, when Sonam Wangchuk broke his fast. That would explain why he seemed so assured despite the criticism that followed. It also explains why he appeared genuinely hurt when some people began casting aspersions on his motives, especially after he had spent weeks fasting for the students’ cause.

My reading is that he broke his fast because he believed there had been a genuine breakthrough.

Many are understandably crediting the CJP for Pradhan’s resignation. But I think it was Wangchuk’s fast that altered the government’s political calculus. Had anything untoward happened to him, the story would almost certainly have become an international one. If there is one thing the Modi government has consistently demonstrated, it is that it is acutely conscious of its global image. Seen in that light, taking a step that immediately eased the pressure was not just sensible. It was politically logical.

I do not know why we are tied up in knots over Pakistan role as mediator between Iran & US. It seems a thankless job. The big player China is not positioning itself as mediator and they have real heft. We diminish ourselves with this Pakistan obsession.
