This morning, I spoke with the new class of mayors in @BHcityleaders, and I began by stressing that what we are doing with the program - bringing people together across the partisan divide - is more important than ever, after the despicable assassination attempt on former President Trump that killed a former fire chief and left others critically injured.

Violence absolutely cannot and must not be a part of America’s political life. The peaceful resolution of our differences is what our democracy is all about.

At the same time, gun violence absolutely cannot be accepted as a normal part of American life - not without allowing so many more people, young and old, to be needlessly killed.

The job of leaders right now is to show how we can stand united - not just with words, but with actions. And that requires reaching across the aisle to find ways to make America safer and stronger.

I've been working to bring Americans together around common sense gun safety laws for two decades - and by joining with @Everytown and @MomsDemand, all of us can help lead the way.
