It is unfortunate that instead of passing an interim order restoring the status quo ante, the Supreme Court has asked for the identification of an open space adjacent to or near the Bhojshala-Kamal Maula complex where the Muslim community can offer Friday noon namaz. This direction comes even as the Court has agreed to hear a petition challenging the Madhya Pradesh High Court judgment declaring the disputed site a temple and prohibiting namaz there.
The Bhojshala-Kamal Maula case is part of a disturbing trend of reopening historical religious disputes, thereby threatening the secular foundations of the Republic. When delivering its final verdict, the apex court should uphold constitutional values and the provisions of the Places of Worship Act, 1991.

Today marks 51 years since the proclamation of National Emergency. On 25 June 1975, the then President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed issued the Emergency proclamation on the advice of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, citing threats from "internal disturbance". Following the proclamation, an all-out assault on democracy was carried out in the name of the "national interest". Fundamental rights were suspended, opposition leaders were jailed and thousands placed under preventive detention without trial under draconian laws, censorship was imposed and the press was muzzled, and all forms of dissent were suppressed. The executive assumed sweeping powers, power was concentrated in the centre, and the judiciary was kept under check.
The Emergency was also a concerted assault on the working class, and the gains hitherto achieved by workers were snatched away. The government cracked down on trade union activity, repressed workers' demonstrations, banned strikes, dismantled regulations, imposed wage freezes, and phased out wage bonuses. Workers were not even allowed to hold traditional May Day rallies, even as their conditions of employment deteriorated. Slums were razed, and forced sterilisation campaigns were conducted, targeting the poor, marginalised, and minority communities. The reign of terror was welcomed by the captains of industry.
If the RSS made peace with the Emergency during that period, as evidenced by the series of letters written by the then RSS Sarsanghchalak, Madhukar Dattatraya Deoras, pleading with Indira Gandhi to revoke the ban on the Sangh and pledging "to participate in the planned programme of action… under the leadership of the Prime Minister," it is at the helm of affairs today, when a state of undeclared Emergency exists in the country. The relentless measures to dilute and weaken our constitutional framework, the use and abuse of constitutional bodies and central agencies, the concentration of power, the capture of the media, the crackdown on dissent, the handing over of India's resources to the country's largest business houses the weakening of hard won labour rights through the implementation of the Labour Codes, the widening inequalities, and the constant targeting of marginalised and minority communities all reveal the neo-fascist tendencies of the BJP-led Union government.
The attack on the right to vote and the questioning of citizenship do not bode well. The RSS is intent on doing away with the Constitution and ushering in a state of permanent emergency that it calls the "Hindu Rashtra". The very existence of India as a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic is at stake. However, history has shown that fascism can be defeated. The people united shall always be victorious!
“The glorious struggles against the Internal Emergency that was declared on 25th June, 1975, will give us strength and inspiration to carry forward the struggle we need to undertake against the undeclared emergency under the rule of Narendra Modi and the BJP, a party which is controlled by the fascistic RSS.”
- CPI(M) General Secretary M A Baby
The ugly fangs of the SIR are coming to the fore yet again. It is not just preventing lakhs of people from exercising their constitutional right to vote, but is also emerging as a tool to determine citizenship in furtherance of the BJP's divisive Hindutva agenda.
Right from the outset, the CPI(M) had warned that the SIR exercise would disenfranchise the poor and vulnerable sections of our country. But now, even an editor of repute and an acclaimed journalist like R Rajagopal has been denied his right to vote.
After being struck off the electoral rolls, he is unable to renew his passport for the very reason of not being on the voters list! What sort of a cruel joke are those in power playing with the lives and rights of India's citizens?
This cannot be allowed to pass. All those who cherish democracy and value citizens' inalienable rights should come out in protest against the SIR, which has been opposed by all opposition parties. The republic has to be reclaimed!
Under PM Narendra Modi's watch, donations to the Ram Temple in Ayodhya has been looted!
Under his watch, an MoS in the Union gets government subsidy — meant for farmers — of almost ₹1 crore!
Under his watch, a BJP Chief Minister and family have amassed hundreds of acres of land!
Modi raised a slogan once, "na khaunga, na khane dunga'. It is the biggest joke of the century!
