At 7 he built a website and ended up in the Guinness records as the world's youngest male webmaster.
At 16 he built a satellite in a school in Jammu.
At 19 he raised 4.3 million dollars in Silicon Valley to fix a problem that even NASA has never fully solved.
His name is Onkar Singh Batra.
He was born in Jammu. His father works in information technology, and that is where his interest started.
He wrote a book at 12. He started a company at 13. He received the National Bal Shakti Award from the President of India for building an interactive website during the pandemic.
In 2020, at 14, he became interested in space.
In 2022, while he was in class 12 at a school in Jammu, he built a satellite called InQube. It weighed about 1 kg. It was India's first open source satellite, which means the design was published for anyone to use.
In the same period he was invited to teach space systems to engineering students at IIT Jammu as a guest professor. He had not finished school.
While building InQube, he ran into a problem that runs through the whole space industry.
Satellites in low Earth orbit go dark. For long stretches of every orbit they are not in line of sight of any ground station on Earth, so nobody can talk to them. These are called dead zones.
It sounds small. It is not. A satellite watching a flood or a fire can be holding the picture you need and be unable to send it for the next 40 minutes.
The existing fixes are partial. You can build more ground stations, which is slow and expensive. You can use relay satellites, but most of them need the customer satellite to carry particular hardware, which most older satellites do not have.
In 2024 he founded a company to solve it. It is called Apolink, from apogee and link. It is based in Palo Alto in California.
The plan is a ring of 32 small satellites carrying both lasers and radios, acting as ground stations in space, and working with satellites that were never built for it.
In 2025, at 19, Y Combinator and other investors put 4.3 million dollars into it, at a valuation of 45 million dollars.
In July 2026 the company launched its first demonstration satellite on a SpaceX mission.
He is 20 now.
He wrote about himself on his own website in plain language. Built websites at a somewhat prodigious age. Got awarded by the President of India. Built a satellite at 16. Brought myself to the United States.
A boy from Jammu is building the internet for space, and almost nobody in his own country knows his name.

The threats told her they knew where she lived and that she should think about her family.
In 5 years she was transferred 7 times.
In the same period she took back about 7,000 hectares of forest from the people who had occupied it.
Her name is Basu Kannogia.
She is an officer of the Indian Forest Service in Madhya Pradesh. She took charge in 2014 with an idea nobody thanked her for. That forest land belongs to the country and to the animals living in it, and not to whoever is powerful enough to fence it off.
Encroachment is the quietest theft there is. A little forest is cleared. A boundary shifts. A wall goes up. Then another, and another, until whole stretches of jungle have simply disappeared into private hands.
The people doing it are rarely poor. They are usually well connected, and they count on officers preferring a quiet life.
She did not give them one. She went after illegal felling, illegal mining, wildlife smuggling, and above all the men sitting on forest land they had no right to. Where other officers filed reports, she evicted.
Her field staff were threatened and attacked for standing next to her.
7 transfers in 5 years is not bad luck. It is a message.
She kept going anyway, post after post. By the time somebody counted, thousands of hectares of forest had been returned to the country it belonged to.
The land could not defend itself. The men who took it were used to winning.
She simply decided to be harder to move than they were.
At six, Vidit Gujrathi wanted to play cricket. But when he was advised to wait before joining a local cricket club, he picked up a chessboard instead.
His father became his first chess coach, and what began as a way to keep him occupied — and beat his dad — soon became a lifelong pursuit.
By 2013, Vidit had become a Grandmaster.
In 2017, he became only the fourth Indian to cross the 2700 Elo mark.
He went on to win the 2023 FIDE Grand Swiss, qualify for the 2024 Candidates Tournament and be part of India’s gold-winning team at the 2024 Chess Olympiad.
Now, that “happy accident” has earned another milestone: Vidit Gujrathi has been named an Arjuna Awardee for his contribution to Indian chess.
Sometimes, the path we stumble into becomes the one that changes everything.

Making his World Championship debut in New Delhi, the Indian shuttler faced defending champion and World No. 1 Shi Yuqi in a tense opening-round battle.
After building a lead in the decider, Ayush saw Shi save four match points and push the contest to the brink.
Then came the shot that ended it.
Ayush shaped to play towards Shi’s forehand before changing direction at the last moment, wrong-footing the World No. 1 and sealing one of the biggest wins of his career.
His coach Sagar Chopda said that moment “speaks volumes of his talent.”

On the night of 14th August 1947, a flag flew on Jawaharlal Nehru's car as it went over Raisina Hill. It was the first time the tricolour we know today was ever flown.
That flag had been stitched under the supervision of a 28 year old woman.
Her name was Surayya Tyabji.
She was born in 1919 in Hyderabad. She was a painter. Her work was later shown in London and in Jakarta. She was married to Badruddin Tyabji, a civil servant who was part of the group working on what independent India would look like.
Everyone had assumed the flag was settled. Pingali Venkayya had designed the tricolour used by the Congress, with Gandhi's charkha in the middle. It had been carried through the freedom movement for over 20 years.
Then, weeks before independence, a problem was raised. That flag was a party flag. A country that was about to include everyone could not fly the symbol of one political party.
So the design had to be redone, quickly.
The Tyabjis were given the job.
They replaced the charkha with the Ashoka Chakra, the wheel from the Lion Capital of Ashoka at Sarnath. The reason was simple and deliberate. Ashoka belonged to all Indians, and to no party.
Their daughter Laila Tyabji has written the family's account of it. Her mother drew the graphic version. The printing press at the Viceregal Lodge made the impressions. Everyone approved.
The English historian Trevor Royle recorded in his book that the flag which flew on Nehru's car that night had been made by Tyabji's wife.
On 22nd July 1947 the design was accepted by the Constituent Assembly.
A report in the Times of India in January 1950 described that first flag as having been presented to the nation by the women of India at the midnight session of the Constituent Assembly on 14th August 1947.
Before the flag, the same couple had worked on the national emblem. Nehru asked Badruddin to do something about it because he had an eye for these things. Surayya drew the version of the 4 lions that has been on every Indian government document since.
She was 28 years old.
She died in 1978 in Mumbai.
Her daughter has said that neither of her parents ever felt they had designed the national emblem. They felt they had only reminded India of something that had always been part of its identity.
Official records of the Constituent Assembly do not name individual contributors, so most textbooks still credit only Venkayya, and his work genuinely came first.
But today, when the flag goes up, look at the wheel in the middle of it.
A young Muslim woman put it there, on purpose, so that no Indian would be left out of it.
