The 2008 U.S. House Elections by county. Democrats won the popular vote by 8.6%, winning a 79 seat majority. A lot of incumbents of both parties were popular, as you can see many district boundaries in this map
@NE02Dem Yep, if he wins, decent chance that a lot of not-so-great legislation could pass. If he's the nominee, gonna vote for Harding in the general to keep Cavanaugh in the unicameral.
Despite falling short in 2023, Vanessa Emlich was able to get elected to the Lincoln Airport Authority in 2025, defeating retired engineer Tom Trumble by 14 percent. Emlich had been appointed to the airport authority in September of 2023 after a vacancy appeared.
This continues Lincoln's streak of electing Democratic mayors since 1999, despite lagging in voter registration. This still shows up in other elections, as the Republican aligned candidates for Airport Authority won by 15% as well this last Tuesday.
Here is a map of the swing. The area around the airport swung towards Emlich by quite a bit, but overall there doesn't really appear to be a defining pattern of a swing (which makes sense due to its nonpartisan nature)
@Speeding_m That would be nice, the ORBT does a good job connecting westroads, uno, and downtown. Think an extension of that could work that would service every hour or so from like 10-7 could help a lot
The streetcar was unpopular but even I am surprised that Stothert lost by as much as she did. I think it helps that Ewing has been Treasurer of Douglas County and was able to frame Stothert as a liberal spender. Hopefully he can make progress on fixing the roads and sinkhole
Though the office is technically nonpartisan, John Ewing (D) defeated Mayor Jean Stothert (R) in Omaha tonight--as of when I pulled the data, he's up nearly 13 points.
Biden and Harris each won Omaha proper by about 19 points, though it's seemed a little redder down-ballot.
@Speeding_m Yeah, the lack of transit in western Omaha is awful but the layout and sprawl makes it difficult to expand west of 680. Honestly, I’d be happy with bus that runs consistently between Omaha and Lincoln
@Speeding_m I’m hopeful about it. Hoping they do expansion similar to Lincoln (more mixed-use neighborhoods) and make it sustainable in the long-term. Probably will need to look into it more though
@BBBMblog Yeah, her husband had also died the year beforehand. To be honest, I don't think Stothert is too upset about losing reelection and wouldn't be surprised if she only ran again due to party pressure
@Speeding_m I had forgotten about the snowstorm, but how Omaha handled it vs Council Bluffs certainly made her look incompetent. I agree on the other things though, her ads she ran at the end probably caused more Dems to turn out against her
@CTIronman It did end up being a pretty nonpartisan race. Stothert had endorsements from the Buffets and a couple of Democratic state senators while Ewing was endorsed by Mike McDonnell and a former Republican mayor of Omaha
