"It is her own soul that Canada risks today. Once that soul is pawned for any consideration, Canada must inevitably conform to the commercial, legal, financial, social, and ethical standards which will be imposed on her by the sheer admitted weight of the U.S."
-Rudyard Kipling
Our best writer was Stephen Leacock, spoken of in the same breath as Mark Twain and admired by Rudyard Kipling in his time.
When you see a Leacock at the used bookstore, buy it without thinking twice.
For utterly predictable reasons, he is mostly erased in favour of Margaret Atwood, and miserable curmudgeons like Mordecai Richler.
Catholic intimacy rules were designed for a world where you courted for 6 months & got married at 22.
Applying “no kissing” rules to a 27 year old in a 2 year relationship heading toward marriage is cruel and legalistic torture.
Today, I sent a letter to the CBC Ombudsman demanding an explanation and accountability for the use of taxpayer money to mislead, deceive and lie to Canadian citizens, including Members of Parliament, in attempts to trick them into participating in a fake documentary smearing the reputation of Canada's first prime minister.
I look forward to her response.
"Longest Serving Prime Minister." It is time to end this noxious myth about Mackenzie King once and for all, writes James Bowden. https://t.co/lRloWBjpMX
Canada's largest Conservative networking conference begins with a pathetic land acknowledgement, declaring Ottawa to be the "never surrendered homeland of the Anishinàbe Algonquin Nation."
This is so embarrassing.
Former Radio-Canada journalist refers to The Crown as the “British Monarchy” and celebrates Bloc leader Yves-François Blanchet for his lack of basic Canadian civic knowledge.
@LukeMontalbano Unfortunately David Johnston was uniquely good in a lineup of mediocrity, the Liberals have always been pretty bad at this. Sauve, Jean, and Clarkson behaved like they were heads of state and not holding a viceregal office.
Canada's next Governor General, Louise Arbour, is asked if she is a monarchist.
Q: "Are you a monarchist?"
A: "This term is unfortunately very often used in a pejorative way. What I can say is that I will accede to a function in which I will be the representative of the Crown, in a constitutional arrangement that I think has served Canada extremely well throughout our history, but even more in recent decades."
Canada’s new Governor General Louise Arbour, while serving as the UN Special Representative for Migration, told German state media that illegal migrants should not be deported, and instead be granted permits.
“The only answer should not be to return to the country of origin.”
Massive collective yawn. This is an utterly predictable, boring, uninspiring, and repetitive appointment. Essentially another vertically and horizontally challenged female functionary who embodies all the intellectual and imaginative limitations and prejudices of Canada's liberal elite. But oh, what a perfect representative of the pretensions and mediocrities of our political-judicial class!
The criteria so far to be The King's representative in Canada for the Liberal party is that you have to be old, a woman, and have some sort of a peak in your public service career.
Even under Carney, it's not a serious or real job to them, but a reward you get in retirement.
I agree, what a proud symbol for Alberta!
The St. George Cross on our flag should remind Albertans that, like England of history and like St. George of legend, we have the strength and courage to overcome our own dragons.
