DURING THE MOBILIZATION WORKSHOP FOR VARAKASHI4ED, ZANU-PF CHAIRMAN FOR HARARE PROVINCE CHAIRMAN MASINIREMBWA SAID THAT THERE IS NO NEED FOR A REFERENDUM FOR PRESIDENT ED MNANGAGWA'S TERM EXTENSION TO 2030.

HE SAID THAT IN TERMS OF SECTION 91(2) OF THE CONSTITUTION OF ZIMBABWE, THE DOCUMENT ITSELF PROVIDES THE PATHWAY. HE HIGHLIGHTED THAT A PRESIDENTIAL TERM IS ONLY REGARDED AS A FULL TERM WHEN A PERSON HAS SERVED THREE YEARS OR MORE IN OFFICE, MEANING THAT ANY PERIOD LESS THAN THREE YEARS DOES NOT CONSTITUTE A FULL PRESIDENTIAL TERM. SO WHAT IS NEEDED IS FOR PARLIAMENT TO POSTPONE THE 2028 ELECTIONS TO 2030 SO THAT THE PRESIDENT CAN ACHIEVE THE 2030 VISION.

HE FURTHER OUTLINED THAT THIS CONSTITUTIONAL ROUTE LIES IN PARLIAMENT EXERCISING ITS AUTHORITY TO POSTPONE THE 2028 HARMONISED ELECTIONS TO A DATE BEYOND 2030, A LAWFUL STEP THAT WOULD ALLOW THE PRESIDENT TO CONTINUE PROVIDING STABLE LEADERSHIP AND GUIDING ZIMBABWE'S NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AGENDA.
