EXCLUSIVE: Inside Shatara Michelle Ford’s ‘Dreams in Nightmares,’ starring Denée Benton, Jasmin Savoy Brown and Charlie Barnett.
Benton plays Z, who’s just been laid off from an adjunct-teaching position at a Los Angeles arts college. She informs her best friends Tasha (Sasha Compère) and Lauren (Dezi Bing) and also tries catching up with her other ride-or-die, Kel (Mars Rucker), who’s been unreachable for days. As the trio hit the road to manifest a reunion with Kel, they confront the state of their own lives, their relationships and their futures.
Ford says, “Something happened in the early 2000s where we kind of started eliminating place — or place was just, New York City or Los Angeles. It’s like location disappeared from how we understood characters and story…. I love going to a new place, understanding how people interact with the place, and I wanted to translate that into a type of film that did that very well, especially in the ‘90s.”
Release is set for Aug. 21 via distributor Lunette Films.

I am tired of everyone bringing up Forever whenever we ask for representation because the people tuned in thats why we have a second season. We should want more than ONE show. Everytime I look up prime got a new show being produced look at how popular Sterling Point became
i think about how upn, disney channel, and nickelodeon had multiple shows and movies about black children/teens/young adults just being normal and how we strayed so far from that that people think its so unrealistic for things to be normal in black coming of age
Anyways I just feel like people just disingenuous and dismissive af like is this the pre 60s where we should stay in the ‘coloreds only’ section? Life wtf are y’all even talking about? Also the fact that other WOC are getting rep but y’all not ready for that convo yet
and what’s being so heavily misunderstood is we want to included ON TOP of getting our own shows. which is why you see people complain about the davenports a lot to prime video.
Always a Witch- not Y/A
Sex Lives of College Girls not Black Y/A
Free Rein- not Black Y/A
First Kill- not Black Y/A
Utopia Falls - not Black Y/A
Reasonable Doubt- not Y/A
Majority of the cast has to be Black in order for it to be Black Y/A. Having a Black character doesn’t make it Black Y/A
one thing i'll say thats ridiculous is everytime somebody expresses that there arent enough black ya shows some oldhead will go "you guys still have forever" as if one show is enough in a sea of white lead ya shows and everbody should shut up💀
Black girls are adultified. We saw it with how folks responded to Keisha Clark’s character. We need the Black teen dramas. They can’t go from watching kid shows that have black female characters to then watching black female led shows that are geared towards 35+.
