Today we’re celebrating some of our newest hard-shelled friends, rare Spider Tortoises hatched right here at the zoo!

Spider Tortoises are native to the dry forests of Madagascar and are critically endangered in the wild due to habitat loss and the illegal pet trade.

This season, our team has welcomed:
• 4 Common Spider Tortoises
• 9 Northern Spider Tortoises
• 1 extremely rare Southern Spider Tortoise
To put that into perspective, this is only about the 12th Southern Spider Tortoise ever hatched at Zoo Knoxville, a huge milestone for this species.
Behind every hatchling is an incredible amount of time, dedication, and expert care focused on helping ensure the survival of these amazing tortoises. We’re so thankful for the keepers and animal care teams who work every day to protect wildlife.
