Sonate pour Violon et Piano (1970, recorded in 1984)
By Ryuichi Sakamoto
from Year Book 1971-1979
Listen: https://t.co/HbcsF4w8iN
Sakamoto composed this piece in 1970, during his first year at Tokyo University of Arts as an assignment in modern composition. Before entering university, he had studied Western music history from Bach to the modern era in just 6-7 years, then continued his systematic study of classical and modern periods in the composition department before creating contemporary works.
The piece premiered in March 1971 at the end of the academic year. However, the version on this compilation was recorded on December 22, 1984, at Kanagawa Prefectural Music Hall during "Kanagawa Arts Festival, 326th Evening of Music Appreciation, Contemporary Composer Series 3: The Music of Sakamoto Ryuichi."
The performers were Yuji Takahashi on piano and Keiko Hizahara on violin, with Sakamoto appearing on stage as a page-turner.
Upon hearing this public performance, Ryuichi recalls thinking that, as contemporary music, it remained rather orthodox and conservative in its execution.
"The premiere was performed by students only at the freshman year-end concert. I also played piano at that time. I was greatly influenced by Akira Miyoshi and Henri Dutilleux, whom Miyoshi deeply admired, and this piece shows a strong influence from Dutilleux.
In my fourth year at university, I took *Akira Miyoshi's class just once, and I brought the score for this piece with me. He remembered this composition.
What Miyoshi said to me then has stayed with me:
'Sakamoto-kun, without color, you cannot see form.'
Form is established through the presence of color. In musical terms, the form of music becomes visible only through changes in timbre. I thought he was truly a fascinating teacher."
*Sakamoto studied composition with Prof. Taminosuke Matsumoto from age 10 and continued under him at Tokyo University of the Arts. He wished to study modern French music and French-style composition with Akira Miyoshi, then a lecturer at the university, but could only attend one class, which left a strong impression.
