The 2024 Oscar Race for Best Actor in a Leading Role is one of the most competitive races in years. Throughout 2023, Cinema has been blessed with world-class performances from male leads. From Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer to Paul Giamatti in the Holdovers, 2023 has been filled with diverse performances from some of the most powerful actors alive. The only thing we know for certain at this point is there will be snubs & those snubs will hurt. In almost any other year, Bradley Cooper’s unforgettable performance as Leonard Bernstein would surely result in an Oscar for Cooper. This year, however, Cooper will be lucky just to make the cut of nominees given the depth of this year’s race. Leonardo DiCaprio gave one of the year’s best performances & is a favorite of the Academy, but Jeffrey Wright & Colman Domingo each gave performances of a lifetime. Nicholas Cage & Joaquin Phoenix already own an Oscar for Best Actor and the pair put forth performances well-deserving of another nomination, but it’s unlikely the Academy will recognize both Cage & Phoenix. Only five actors will receive an Oscar nomination and this year’s race has at least eight performances worthy of recognition. It will be fascinating to see how this race unfolds but regardless of which actor receives a nomination, Cinema is the ultimate winner. Cheers to all of the amazing performances in 2023, none of which should be taken for granted.
