Abortion is a human rights issue and goes beyond religions. There are secular pro-life organisations like @secularprolife as well as Jains, Muslims and Hindus who believe that preborn babies deserve to live.

The controversy over DVK leader and Tamil Nadu Speaker J. Prabhakar appearing at a Catholic anti-abortion rally raises a much larger question: Should religious doctrine have a role in shaping public policy on reproductive rights?

Today, it may be Christian theology. Tomorrow, it could be Hindu, Muslim, Jewish or Sikh theology.

A secular republic cannot pick and choose which religion gets to influence a woman’s reproductive autonomy.

A woman’s rights should not become a battleground for someone else’s theology.
