Hundreds of migrants are reported missing off the Spanish coast. Migrant aid groups fear a “catastrophe” just weeks after the Fortress Europe policy potentially led to the deaths of over 400 migrants off the Greek coast.

At least 300 people who sailed on three migrant boats from Senegal to Spain’s Canary Islands have disappeared, according to the migrant aid group “Caminando Fronteras.”

On Monday evening, Spanish authorities rescued a boat carrying 86 people, but the fate of hundreds of others remains unknown. Spain has only deployed one search plane, which operates only for a few hours a day, drawing criticism from Caminando Fronteras.

The impending catastrophe comes only a week after 51 migrants died on the same route off Spain’s Canary Islands.

The Atlantic migration route is one of the deadliest in the world. According to Caminando Fronteras, at least 778 people have died this year. Unreported cases mean that the actual number is probably much higher.

At least 559 people died in 2022 and 1,126 in 2021 during attempts to reach the Canary Islands, according to UN data. However, these figures may only represent a fraction of the actual death toll.

Meanwhile, the EU has pursued a deal that further fortifies its borders, imposes stricter asylum processes, and grants greater power to EU border states to send back migrants – a continuation of the EU policy of keeping people out instead of helping those in need.
