Got in an Uber at 3:30 am in Milwaukee.
The Uber driver was an immigrant from Burma.
During the drive, his wife called concerned and asked him when he was coming home.
I instantly got vivid flashbacks to my childhood…
My father and mother immigrated to the United States from Khartoum, Sudan and settled in Brooklyn, NY in the late 1980s…
NYC was NOT safe during this time and was rampant with crime.
In 1990 NYC had 2,245 murders, highest in its history.
My dad didn’t speak English, had no money, and no skills.
He drove a cab to support my mother, me, and my sister in the early 1990s.
My father was robbed, and assaulted multiple times.
He was even run over once, and left for dead…he recovered, but had to wear a cast.
He didn’t have health insurance, and refused to take welfare.
He drove a cab in a cast for months to support us…
My father worked long hours EVERYDAY and came home late every night.
My mother called him EVERY night to make sure he was ok.
She came downstairs after every shift to greet him, and help him walk up the stairs because he could not walk.
Alot of you were surprised by my enormous respect for Rudy Giuliani today…
Why?
I HAD to thank him for cleaning up the streets of NYC and being tough on the violent crime my father was a victim of on multiple occasions.
When I heard that Uber driver talk to his wife it made me remember, and realize how LUCKY, and PROUD I am to be born here as an American citizen.
As Americans, we often take our liberty and opportunities for granted.
I’m so blessed to have been born here, serve this country, and be able to attend the RNC.
I owe this to my parents, who are STILL together.
Now at 34, I thank god I grew up POOR, but had 2 parents rich in love.
Hug your parents.
Kiss your mom.
Thank your dad.
You only get them once in a lifetime.
