🇮🇷 In 1953, Britain and the United States helped overthrow Iran’s Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh after his government nationalized the country’s oil industry.

This was not a conspiracy theory.

Declassified U.S. records documented the CIA’s role in Operation AJAX, the covert operation to remove Mosaddegh and install a government more favorable to the Shah and Western interests.

Britain had enormous economic interests at stake. The Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, Britain’s dominant oil enterprise in Iran, was generating vast petroleum revenues while Iranians demanded greater control over their own resources.

Mosaddegh nationalized the oil industry.

Britain responded with pressure and an oil embargo.

The US Eisenhower administration then approved a CIA operation to overthrow his government, citing Cold War fears and the possibility of communist influence.

The CIA funded political unrest, organized propaganda, cultivated opponents and helped mobilize street demonstrations. Its own 1954 account describes the creation of a covert military apparatus inside the Iranian Army and a propaganda campaign designed to undermine Mosaddegh.

The first coup attempt failed.

The Shah fled Iran.

But the CIA-backed operation was revived.

On August 19, 1953, forces supporting General Fazlollah Zahedi seized key government installations. Fighting erupted in Tehran. Tanks attacked Mosaddegh’s home after earlier assaults had been repelled.

More than 50 people were killed and around 300 wounded that day.

Mosaddegh was arrested.

The Shah, America's puppet returned.

Mosaddegh was removed from power.

And Iran entered a new political era under an increasingly powerful yet brutal monarchy.

The CIA's own records later described the objective plainly: remove Mosaddegh and replace his government with a pro-Western government under the Shah.

This was not simply about “democracy versus communism.”

Oil, strategic influence and control over Iran's political direction were central to the crisis.

Operation Ajax became one of the defining examples of Cold War intervention in the Global South—and its legacy continues to shape how many Iranians view the United States and Britain to this day.

Iran did not forget. History did not forget.
