Meet Lucy Higgs Nichols—a story of courage, resilience, and recognition. 🙌

Born into slavery in Tennessee, Lucy escaped during the Civil War and found refuge with the 23rd Indiana Infantry Regiment. There, she served as a nurse throughout the war, providing care and support to soldiers in their most difficult moments. 🩺✨

After the war, Lucy moved to Indiana with the regiment, continuing to work alongside the veterans. When she applied for a pension under the Army Nurses Pension Act of 1892, it was initially denied due to lack of official records.

But her story didn’t end there. 💪 Fifty-five veterans of the 23rd petitioned Congress, testifying to her service and ensuring she received the recognition she had earned. Her pension was finally granted, a testament to the impact she made and the support of those who stood by her.

This photo captures Lucy with her fellow veterans at a reunion in 1898. She passed away in 1915 and is buried in New Albany, Indiana—a true symbol of perseverance and dedication. ❤️
