On this day—60 years ago!—Star Trek premiered on American television with the episode “The Man Trap” and history was made. The episode was chosen to be first because it had action, a monster, and showed “strange new worlds.” Happy #StarTrekDay!
On this day – 5th September – in 1972, the Munich Massacre began.
The Munich Massacre was a tragic event that took place during the Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany, where eleven members of the Israeli Olympic team were taken hostage and killed by the Palestinian terrorist group Black September.
The attack began on 5th September when the terrorists stormed the athletes’ village, resulting in a tense standoff that lasted over twenty hours. A failed rescue attempt by German authorities at the Fürstenfeldbruck airbase led to the deaths of all eleven hostages, along with five of the eight terrorists and a German police officer.
