Some personal news, as they say: Next Wednesday will be my last day at The Pilot. I've accepted a new job working in nonprofit communications in the Midwest! I am so grateful to those who have let me tell their stories over the years.

[Tidewater Media Guild @TidewaterGuild]

The staffs of The Virginian-Pilot and Daily Press won't do any work for Alden Global Capital on Feb. 1 in protest of their ongoing refusal to pay us what we're worth.

Thinking of all my former @virginianpilot colleagues covering the mass shooting in Chesapeake.

[Ryan Murphy @JournoMurph]

Police confirm that the shooter was a Walmart manager.

Didn’t share many more details - no name or details about the man who shot at least 10 people using a pistol, killing six and himself.

Police said they found the shooter dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

@Shominik Great to see you (virtually)!

From @ChesleyRoger: "'Spilled drink' is up there for the worst, most needless excuse I’ve ever heard of. How in the hell did that justify five people being shot, and two families now planning funerals?" https://t.co/4xK8uEIN1t

Sierra Jenkins, 25, was one of two people killed early Saturday outside Chicho's Pizza Backstage in downtown Norfolk.

We remember her. 1/6

[Ana Ley @La__Ley]

On the last day of my brief time as an editor at The Pilot, I told Sierra she was one of the brightest young journalists I’d ever had the pleasure of knowing. I told her she was destined for big things she couldn’t even yet imagine.

[Margaret Matray @MargaretMatray]

Utterly devastating. Sierra treated every story with such care, every source with such compassion. There are just no words. No fucking words.

[The Virginian-Pilot @virginianpilot]

We are devastated to report that Virginian-Pilot and Daily Press reporter Sierra Jenkins was among the victims of an overnight shooting in downtown Norfolk. She was 24. https://t.co/ctmC5xHvkr

A new report finds @ODU failed to act on the Blake Bailey sexual assault allegations I first reported on in July. It substantiates 2 of the claims & calls ODU's statement to me ill-conceived, insensitive and harmful to the University. (by @janeharpervp)

Some lovely remembrances of Mal Vincent: "Everyone who spent time with Mal has a story about him. And they’re usually pretty good because Mal was interesting. In a world where too many people prefer to blend in, Mal was a man unlike anyone else." https://t.co/dhdX615frC

Lee Enterprises says Alden Global Capital cannot nominate members to its board of directors at the 2022 annual meeting. (Alden had served a notice of wanting to nominate three candidates). From Lee:

19-year-old Christian Hall, who was Chinese American, kept his hands in the air as Pennsylvania State Police shot and killed him, new video obtained by @spotlightpa and @nbcnews shows. https://t.co/ry5gmitdZe

#PayItForward: @uwci’s The ReadUp program is in need of volunteers! The program aims to give elementary students practice to improve their reading. They say they are seeing more kids further behind in reading skills.

[Margaret Matray @MargaretMatray]

@La__Ley @nytimes Miss you!

[Arika Herron @ArikaHerron]

Can you spare an hour a week? Consider spending it reading with third graders! They, and @uwci, need your help!
