And claiming that if the President demands something, it’s automatically legal. That is not how our Constitution works.

David Pakman’s excellent video highlights the dangerous attempt to redefine Presidential power in a way that echoes Richard Nixon’s most authoritarian instincts. This is happening at the same time six right-wing extremist Supreme Court justices appear to have handed the Presidency a form of temporary immunity from prosecution – a decision that completely contradicts our democracy.

I want to be very clear. Members of the military swear an oath to the Constitution, not to any President. They are trained to reject unlawful orders, whether that is being told to commit war crimes or being instructed to attack civilians. That foundation matters. Because Donald Trump has already ordered illegal actions, including blowing up boats in international waters, and he continues to encourage blind loyalty.

Let us also not forget January 6th, when Trump orchestrated and directed an attempt to overturn the peaceful transfer of power. If Mike Pence had not refused to be intimidated, the outcome could have been catastrophic.

Leaders like Mark Kelly, Elissa Slotkin, and other former military and intelligence officials are reminding service members of their duty: you are not required to follow an unlawful order.

Trump has openly called American citizens “the enemy within” and is grooming and pressuring military leadership to view protesters as targets. We need to be honest about what that means for the future of this country.
