For all the young hockey players out there playing for tough or hard coaches…

I played for a lot of hard coaches in my day where sometimes it wasn't easy, but this one piece of advice that my parents gave me really helped to put things into perspective allowing me to thrive in that environment:

Listen to what they're saying…not how they're saying it. 

Sometimes tough coaches will raise their voice. They'll get into you on a consistent basis.  They’ll push you more than you want to be pushed. 

Listen to the message of what they're trying to teach you. They're just trying to make you better.

I used that throughout my entire career and it really helped me to become the player that I wanted to be. It helped me to relish and thrive in hard environments. 

Tough coaches push you outside of your comfort zone, which is where development lives. There will be times you don’t like it. But for the younger kids out there, if you can learn to love being pushed and you can have a perspective that the coach is just trying to make you better…it’ll put you on a path to succeed the higher the level you go.
