Road Safety in Action at Midleton Fire Station

Midleton Fire Station welcomed approximately 750 Transition Year students from Midleton and Carrigtwohill for an impactful road safety and emergency awareness event.

Students heard from @CorkCountyFire Service officers about the importance of knowing emergency exits, looking out for one another, and making smart, safe decisions.

The day concluded with a powerful road traffic collision simulation, highlighting the devastating consequences of drink driving. The exercise involved @GardaTraffic, the @AmbulanceNAS , and the local undertaker, giving students a realistic insight into the real‑world impact of unsafe choices.

❗ Remember: Never drink or take drugs and drive and never get into a car with someone you believe may be under the influence.

5 Things I Have Learned Travelling with a Feeding Tube:
1. You can be nil by mouth, have a broken jaw, and be living with a palliative diagnosis of head and neck cancer - and still have fun!
2. A feeding tube changes the logistics, not the destination. It takes more planning, more equipment, and more organisation, but adventure is still possible.
3. People might stare when you are syringing food into your stonach but giving them a Paddington stare back usually works!
4. The biggest challenge is often not the tube itself but managing the supplies, feeds, syringes, and medication that travel with it, especially when an airline loses your bags!
5. Cancer may have rewritten the itinerary, but it hasn't cancelled the journey. There is still a world to explore, memories to make, and reasons to keep moving forward.
My bonus lesson for others: never underestimate the joy of simply being somewhere different. When you've spent enough time in hospitals, even an ordinary day away can feel extraordinary.
