🔸 November 26 - Saint Stylianos 👶 🔸

Today, we commemorate Saint Stylianos of Paphlagonia. He is the patron Saint and protector of children (born and unborn), orphans, and couples trying to conceive.

St Stylianos was born in the 6th century in the city of Adrianopolis (today Eskipazar, Turkey). From an early age he was determined to devote his life to serving the Lord. Inheriting a great fortune after his parents’ death, he distributed it all to the poor and became a monk at a monastery.

When the monks became jealous of his zealous asceticism, wisdom and piety, he left the monastery to join the desert hermits, and entered a cave where he labored in prayer and fasting. He did not withdraw from society completely however, and often returned to Paphlagonia to offer the people spiritual guidance.

On one of these visits, Stylianos was so consumed by the Holy Spirit that he felt compelled to place his hand on the head of a sick child - something he had not up to that time dared to do. Sensing the power of the Lord being transferred through his extended arm, the sick child immediately recovered.

The holiness of St Stylianos became evident to the inhabitants of Paphlagonia, and his cave soon became a magnet for both the physically afflicted and suffering souls. By his prayers, the sick were cured, and infertile women were able to bear children.

Stylianos especially concerned himself with the care of children, healing those with even the most hopeless of illnesses. As many families entrusted Stylianos with the care and spiritual edification of their children, he sought out a larger headquarters, and recruited the help of his fellow hermits.

This endeavor was probably the first day-care centre in the world, where mothers could safely leave their children while tending to other matters of the home.

The humble Stylianos was once approached by greedy mercenaries seeking to commercialize his talents. To these offers, he smiled and respond that he had already been paid in advance for his services when the serenity of the Holy Spirit descended upon him.

St Stylianos lived to a ripe old age, and reposed in peace with a wry smile still etched onto his face.

🔸 November 9 - Saint Nektarios the Wonderworker of Aegina 🔸

St Nektarios was born Anastasios in 1846 in Thrace to poor parents. Havng studied in Constantinople in his youth, he became a monk on the island of Chios in 1876, and took the name Nektarios upon being ordained a deacon in 1877.

After completing his theological studies, he went to Alexandria where he was ordained a priest in 1886. Having shown great zeal preaching the Word of God, he was made Metropolitan of the Pentapolis in Libya in 1889.

Envious of his popularity and swift ascent through the ranks of ecclesiastical office, certain clerics began spreading false rumors to Patriarch Sophronios that Nektarios wanted to take his position. Troubled by this, Sophronios ordered him to leave Egypt in 1890.

Without defending himself, Nektarios left for Athens. Since his name had been soiled, he was unable to find a position as a bishop. In 1894, he was appointed director of the Rizarios Ecclesiastical School in Athens. While in this position, he wrote his famous hymn Agni Parthene (“O Virgin Pure”).

Through his eloquent sermons, his dedication to educating aspiring priests, his generosity despite his own poverty, his great meekness and fatherly love, he became a shining light and a spiritual guide to many.

The exceedingly humble St Nektarios is well known for having personally performed the most lowly tasks, including sweeping floors and cleaning toilets.

In 1904, at the request of pious nuns, he began building a convent dedicated to the Holy Trinity on the island of Aegina (today the Monastery of St Nektarios). He remained here from 1908 until the end of his earthly life.

Through his prayers, he delivered the island from drought, healed the sick, and cast out demons from souls. He also patiently endured every wicked slander, forgiving his accusers and not seeking to avenge himself.

St Nektarios reposed in 1920 at the Aretaeion Hospital in Athens from prostate cancer. After his repose, his undershirt was placed by nurses on a paralyzed man’s bed, and the man was instantly healed. His funeral was conducted by his closest friend St Savvas of Kalymnos who painted the first icon of him.

Η Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου είναι η μεγαλύτερη καλοκαιρινή γιορτή του Χριστιανισμού. Είναι η μέρα που η Παναγία περνά από τη γη στον ουρανό, κοντά στον Υιό της με τρόπο ένδοξο και θαυμαστό. Στέκεται φρουρός στις δύσκολες στιγμές του ελληνισμού, προστάτης του έθνους μας.
