Nobody celebrates the Madonna like Sicily, Italy 🇮🇹✨

In Sciacca, the Madonna del Soccorso has been carried through the streets for four centuries

The statue was carved in Carrara marble in Palermo in 1503 and brought to Sciacca by local fishermen the following year

They have carried her ever since

In 1626, when the plague was devastating the city, the Madonna was taken out in procession

People say lightning suddenly came from a clear sky, white smoke rose from the statue, and the plague stopped

The people of Sciacca never forgot

Every February 2 and August 15, around a hundred fishermen carry her through the streets, many of them barefoot, on her old float covered in gold, silver and coral

Four hundred years later, they are still keeping the same promise 🌹
