Others profs think the opposite. They are dismayed by the idea of academics targeted over scientific collaborations, research, training of students, just because China. A third group doesn't like the smell of China Initiative, but thinks Lieber made a big mistake by lying.
How did Lieber become a target? I know for a fact that other people in Harvard chemistry department take a dim view of China influence, and think enough is enough. Have to wonder if a colleague turned him in.
This is a situation of getting convicted for the coverup. Also tax evasion like Al Capone. No charges brought related to espionage or IP theft. Doesn't appear that people think that even happened with Lieber. So in a way, no underlying crime.

Lieber was a specialist in nanowires with interesting electronic properties. Not even sure if this stuff has had any application or anyone would wish to steal it.
