For those saying the golem was pointless or something like that are missing the point of it. It was a symbolism of Fatima herself that will turn into a monster and will probably have her humanity on (or her love for Ellis will retain her humanity) and therefore she will be the golem... in a sense that she will be the protector for the town folks. The golem was a metaphor (lack of better word) for her journey to becoming a monster and potentially be able to retain her humanity.
