I obviously support National and value its MPs. But this argument feels designed to make splitting your vote sound complicated and create doubt and fear in voters’ minds.
Party vote ACT or NZ First. Electorate vote National. That’s a straightforward message. I think voters deserve more credit.
Protecting National’s own party vote is understandable. But what’s best for National as a party isn’t automatically what’s best for the wider centre-right bloc or in my view New Zealand.
Calling the idea a “fool’s errand” because people might get confused is hardly a convincing argument. If the concern is that voters don’t understand MMP surely it’s fair to explain the rules and let them decide.
To date I’ve declined all media requests to speak on this topic mainly because I’ve been outside NZ for six months. But I believe this can be communicated simply and reach a large number of voters at scale. I support all the current coalition partners and believe on balance that educating voters about this has more upside than downside.
This is a critical election for the country’s future. I want the current government returned. Losing talented National list MPs would be a real cost and I don’t dismiss that. But retaining a capable centre-right government matters more than protecting any individual party’s seats.

"The interests of an individual party and the arithmetic of a governing bloc are not always identical and this is the source of the suddenly rather heated argument on the right. National wants to save National. People promoting the overhang strategy are looking at the coalition as a whole."
Marama telling Jack Tame I lobby the government and expect something in return for donations could not be further from the truth.
To be clear, I have never lobbied the government on anything. Less than 1% of ZURU’s business is in New Zealand.
We donate because we care about NZ’s future and strongly believe National and ACT have the talent and strategy to move the country forward. The return we want is a more prosperous New Zealand for everybody. That’s it. Very simple.
Last night, TVNZ ran a story about ACT’s proposal to build a world-class National Cancer Centre.
However, TVNZ decided to include the objections of Dr Christopher Jackson.
Dr Jackson just happens to be the husband of current Labour MP Rachel Brooking, a significant and material fact that TVNZ deliberately chose not to reveal to viewers.
His objections were included immediately after those of Labour’s Health Spokesperson Ayesha Verrall, and the segment finished with the last word from Dr Jackson - it’s hard to argue that TVNZ isn’t continuing to stack the deck ahead of the election.
Fascinating revelation from Judith Collins they when they were negotiating with the PPTA, the no one issue the PPTA wanted to talk about was Palestine - not terms and conditions, curriculum, student achievement etc.
There have been 67 polls since the last election.

Honestly how. Understand people might not be 100% happy but really the left … how short are people’s memories. Scary. If you think NZ struggling now it will be driven into the ground and buried beyond repair if the left gets back in. https://t.co/K3tSszxGY8
