Postdoctoral Fellow, @CIMH_SPH. Increasing access to mental healthcare through #impsci, recovery from acculturative and traumatic stress, views mine, she/her.
Nearly 4 years ago, my team started to investigate the cumulative, longitudinal effects of intersectional minority stress in a large sample (N=1,070), and how they and discrimination converge to affect mental health. Check out our preprint here. https://t.co/cmfj052T3u
PTSD diagnoses have long been offered only to folks whose trauma met narrow criteria. As @DrTanyaSaraiya, @DrAlexBauer and colleagues posit, expanding DSM-5 Criterion A to include invisible, identity-based, and systemic trauma is a necessary step towards mental health equity.
A few days before #ISTSS, I wanted to share our critical review and position paper on the need to expand criterion A in PTSD to be more culturally valid: https://t.co/iqPUiz9aL9
It is arguably one of the reasons I came into the psych field in the first place.
In this six-week online workshop with @MarinaWeissPhd, we’ll craft poems about the self and difficult emotions, utilizing techniques to bolster our well-being while drawing inspiration from other activists, theorists and artists.

@waityourarobot At first, this may take time but once you've got it set up, it will only take a few minutes.
Also, it's a great idea to get thread that matches your fabric so that any newbie moves are better camoflaged. When I'm done moving, I'm also happy to help
@waityourarobot from the spool of thread. Your machine will likely be different in terms of tension and other settings by model, but once you have a workable setup, you're good to go.
It also took ~10 years to get from the pilot to expansion to all 5 boroughs, program evaluation, and then the paper.
IPV, which affects 1 in 3 women, 1 in 4 men, and 1 in 2 gender non conforming/trans folks, is still seen as a fringe issue by many mainstream psych journals.
Huge gratitude and thanks to the survivors and advocates who trusted my former @Monk_Lab team to integrate mental health services into all five Family Justice Centers for survivors of intimate partner violence in NYC. It was an honor to be part of this.

In addition to showing that it is feasible to adapt mental health services for a high risk population in a non-medical setting, we also helped adapt the trauma-informed, culturally responsive program to the specific language and cultural needs of survivors in each borough.
@DrBenKatz However, there's lots of data supporting the idea that the quality of therapy is dependent on variables such as the therapeutic alliance, and does not vary by the therapist's degree (e.g. https://t.co/vdi1KBJXiW)
@DrBenKatz A quick google suggests that the average MSW makes $53k (https://t.co/pNq7EqpAta…) while the average psychologist makes $134k (https://t.co/BrX6A1fkmT)
@DickinsonMSW@DrBenKatz I would also submit that PhDs can include a lot of flexibility in work outside of therapy, such as policy, research in academia or corporate america, neuropsych assessment, teaching, administration, and HR-type roles.
I'm so proud to be part of the @CIMH_SPH team! Check out this video where you can see our team describe a little bit about the work we do to expand access to mental healthcare.
