I was in an office building in Tokyo visiting a friend's company. Waiting for the elevator with a bunch of businesspeople.

Elevator arrived, everyone got in. I was closest to the buttons so I asked "what floors?"

Called out like six different floors. I pressed all of them.

A woman next to me gently said "in Japan, the person closes to buttons becomes elevator operator. You did well."

I didn't know that was a thing. I just thought I was being polite.

She explained: "Button position is responsibility position. You ask floors, you press buttons, you hold door-close button when everyone exits. It is a small service role."

For the rest of the ride I took it seriously. Pressed the door-open button at each floor to hold it for people exiting. Everyone bowed slightly to me as they got off.

I felt like I had a tiny job. Elevator operator for 30 seconds.

When it was my floor, the remaining people said "thank you for your service" in Japanese.

I visited my friend and told him about it. He laughed and said "yes, button position is real. Some salarymen compete for it to show politeness."

The next day I deliberately stood by the buttons in every elevator I took. Performed my duty each time.

Got head nods, got thank yous, one old man told me I had "good button timing."

I peaked at elevator operation in Japan.

This is not true. We, the people, have not elected our representatives in Govt. They were selected and appointed by Parties.
