📢UNEP Responds Positively to ICOMOS and IUCN Call for Action on Polluting Wrecks

@UNEP has formally acknowledged the urgent concerns raised by ICOMOS and @IUCN in their joint statement issued on 11 June 2025 about the growing environmental and cultural threats posed by potentially polluting historic shipwrecks.

In a letter dated 27 June, UNEP welcomed the proposal to develop guidelines or a toolkit to evaluate and address the risks these wrecks pose to marine ecosystems, cultural heritage, and coastal communities. UNEP expressed readiness to collaborate and be guided by ICOMOS and IUCN leadership, underscoring its commitment to tackling marine pollution in alignment with the goals of the UN Decade of Ocean Science.

➡️This encouraging response marks an important step toward international cooperation in safeguarding both natural and cultural underwater heritage. UNEP also highlighted the upcoming United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7), scheduled for December 2025, as a critical moment to further this dialogue. ICOMOS and IUCN remain committed to supporting UNEP and partners in advancing proactive and preventative solutions for a clean, healthy, and resilient ocean.
