Many don’t realize that the first people Hitler sent to his concentration camps weren’t everyday Jewish citizens, but his political opponents. So, when Trump rants about retribution, locking up his opponents, and giving them “very long sentences,” I can’t help but take him seriously… because history teaches us that is what fascist dictators do during their “Day One” period to consolidate their power. (After all, if you’re hellbent on staying in power but aren’t likely to win the next election, you can’t have your political opponents running around free.)

The Taliban has issued a decree banning Afghan women from hearing each other’s voices.

The Taliban’s minister for the “propagation of virtue and prevention of vice” (I.e. the Taliban’s “morality police”) said,

“When women are not permitted to call takbir or athan [Islamic call to prayer], they certainly cannot sing songs or music . . . . Even when an adult female prays and another female passes by, she must not pray loudly enough for them to hear . . . . they aren’t even permitted to hear [each other’s] voices while praying, let alone for anything else.”

This new law marks another intensification of the Taliban’s draconian suppression of women into nobodyhood.

The reason they keep women from hearing each other, communicating, experiencing sound, music, laughter and joy is to keep them subdued, isolated, without personhood, and increasingly amenable to total erasure.

How much longer can we ignore these regimes treating women as less than cattle - which despite having no basic rights, still enjoy the right to see, to feel, to make noise, and to be heard? Are our women really less than this?

So far today we learned that Trump secretly gave away our COVID supplies to Putin, that Trump quashed the 4500 tips about Kavanaugh’s rape allegations, & that Kamala Harris is going to expand Medicare to cover home care for seniors and hearing/vision.

1. The draft in the United States hasn't been in effect since December 27th, 1972. That was the last day young men were inducted in our Armed Forces. And yes, that means young men in the U.S. have been free of being drafted longer than young women have had abortion access.

@JessicaValenti Twenty years ago, I wrote my thesis on access to prenatal genetic services in WA. So many - especially rural - HCW said that, due to their religion, they would not offer even amnio because a woman might chose to abort the fetus. I'm sad but not surprised we're here now.

A message of solidarity from Lebanese 🇱🇧 singer Carine Bassili to Israel 🇮🇱 and the Jewish people, singing “October Rain” in Arabic. Worth listening and sharing

This is the first time a song in Arabic has been dedicated to Israel as a gift of solidarity.

Bassili decided to translate the song into Arabic following the October 7th massacre against Israel, honoring the 1,200 Israelis who were slaughtered by Hamas and the 101 Israeli children, women, men, and elderly still in captivity in Gaza by Hamas.
