Tested this idea before the deadline. Three problems:

1.A model can’t introspect its own weights. Ask Fable for its “operating manual” and you get well-written generic reasoning advice — verify your work, decompose problems, don’t guess. Opus 4.8 already knows all of that. You’re not extracting Fable; you’re having Fable write a mediocre system prompt.

2.The $4.0M→$4.2M test proves nothing. Any model with “re-derive percentages” in its prompt catches that. That’s instruction-following, not a brain transplant. Run the two models on a problem Opus actually fails and the “manual” moves the needle ~0%.

3.Notably absent: your own extracted manual. If one Fable session produces a portable reasoning engine, posting it would cost you nothing and prove everything.

The real version of this play isn’t a one-shot generic manual — it’s months of encoding your specific workflows into skills, checklists, and correction logs that any model can execute. That’s worth doing. It was worth doing before the pricing change, and no deadline panic required — Anthropic says Fable’s leaving plans temporarily, which the post also skips.
