What's wrong with the NYT piece on UCLA? It says: The melee began when a group of counterprotesters started tearing away metal barriers..."
Wrong! The melee began 6 days earlier with an encampment that was far from "peaceful". My description of events goes as follows:
Chancellor Block has shared this message with the UCLA community: https://t.co/jhlTWj1dds… He summarizes the situation fairly accurately, with one important exception. President Drake's plan to calm protests by limiting law enforcement was based on a totally mistaken assessment of the mentality and aims of the encampment protesters. Whereas previous UC protests were aimed at getting the attention of authorities, these new protesters's aim has been to marginalize, malign and intimidate Jewish students and faculty on the same UC campus. It led to the peaceful counter rally of Sunday noon, April 28, organized by the Israeli American Council (IAC).
This rally has changed public perception of the protest, unmasked its racist anti-Zionist character and made the Chancellor declare the encampment unlawful. In summary, Drake was wrong and IAC was right.
Unfortunately, the declaration of unlawfulness was not followed with a firm ultimatum, time table and Police presence, and that led to the horrible and condemnable riots the night of May 1st. I've joined the other Faculty Groups in condemning those riots, regardless of who the perpetrators were. I have emphasized however that the violence would have been avoided had UCLA taken stronger and timely action against the unlawful and racist encampment.
Why? Because most people do not grasp how ingenious fascism really is -- it does work. Hard to believe, but it does work, scoring victory after victory, until people wake up and find it's too late. Campus encampment is its first victory.
