To see them return, most of them now centenarians, is to watch living history walk back onto this soil. What they did here in June 1944 was more than a military operation. It was a promise kept. America came not to conquer, but to liberate.

In 2026, the year of America’s 250th anniversary of independence, our friendship is not a matter of circumstance. It is a matter of conviction. And that conviction is shared between friends and allies. The Atlantic does not separate us so much as it binds us together.

This weekend, at the ceremonies in Normandy, we will honor their sacrifice and that of their brothers in arms. France will never forget.
