Jason Blum says Hollywood’s box office slump came from “making the wrong movies” for younger audiences, relying on aging IP that appealed more to their parents’ generation:

“The audience was out there; it’s just that we were making the wrong movies for them,” says Blum, whose company Blumhouse Atomic Monster produced “Obsession” and “Backrooms.” “It’s not just about finding people who are popular on YouTube or TikTok and throwing a bunch of money at them. The directors of ‘Backrooms’ and ‘Obsession’ toiled over their scripts for years. You can’t rush things. The movies have to be good, and that takes time and effort.”

FWIW, I haven't seen the current level of excitement in the marketplace for feature spec material since at least 2022.

There is a real hunger out there for great, unique material. Especially scripts can attract top-tier actors, as packaging is often still key in selling it.
