Wood said he will be better moving forward. “I plan on being here for a long time, so I feel like I’ve got to be able to set an example for stuff like that.”

Since rejoining the rotation after the trade deadline, Andrew Alvarez has a 2.15 ERA, 0.974 WHIP and 8.8 K/9. With one start to go this season, he's got a 3.17 ERA over 108 IP. Hasn't gotten a ton of attention, but he's solidified a spot in the 2027 rotation.

Cade Cavalli signed a contract extension, tossed 5 scoreless innings and reached 200 strikeouts. CJ Abrams joined the 30-30 Club. And Josiah Gray pitched in an MLB game for the first time in 897 days, closing out a 9-1 win.

That's a pretty good day for the Washington Nationals.

Good catch by @stoudt524: The Nats did sign free agent Will Harris to a 3-year, $24 million deal entering 2020. That one did not turn out well, either.

If completed, Cavalli would be the first Nationals player to sign an extension pre-free agency since Keibert Ruiz in 2023. He'd be the first pitcher to sign anything more than a 2-year deal with the Nats since Stephen Strasburg following the 2019 World Series.

The Nationals and Cade Cavalli are nearing a contract extension that would buy out at least one of his free agent years, per source. Young staff ace still has 3 years of arbitration eligibility, wouldn't be free agent until 2030. (@ByRobertMurray first to report nearing a deal.)
