Take Venezuela for example. The first thing Chavez did was have the state seize control of all of the oil, including Citgo. All of it.

You couldn't produce oil without beyond owned by the govt. Chavez wouldn't allow it.

Socialism is an umbrella term that includes different mechanisms of enforcement. Communism, democratic socialism, national socialism, etc. Just because you like this form of socialism doesn't make it not socialist.

The State takes a monopoly of a sector and forces everyone to finance it so the State can distribute its services. That's literally socialism, no matter the mental gymnastics you play. State police = socialized production of security.

Without getting into the minarchy vs anarchy debate, if you believe all government sectors are inefficient and prone to corruption, you should be ESPECIALLY critical of "core...functions" to its operation and society.

Conservatives don't believe the government should do nothing on all issues. That's hardcore libertarians/AnCaps.

Rather, conservatives believe government has a handful of legitimate roles it should be very active in, but should be hesitant go outside those roles. Border security and enforcing immigration laws are certainly one of the proper duties of government.

Also, it would be self-defeating for a small government advocate to be OK with open borders. Because the people entering will have kids who vote mostly for Democrats. Illegal immigration also shores up the population (and thus apportionment) of declining blue states. Were it not for illegal immigration, California's population would have declined for the first time ever.

Democrats have realized these electoral benefits, so they cynically flipped their position on illegal immigration from what it was two decades ago, when even Schumer was calling for a border wall. That's also why Biden let in millions.
