🇺🇸 New York Yankees was a soccer club that lasted just one year. They won a trophy. However, they were unable to claim it under the name of New York Yankees.
Formed in 1931, when the owner of Fall River FC, Sam Mark, decided to relocate the club to New York to try and capitalise on marketing, the club merged with the New York Soccer Club. The new club was to be named New York Yankees.
The club entered the 1931 edition of the American Soccer League, finishing 3rd, but failing to qualify for the play-offs. However, they did manage to reach the National Challenge Cup Final.
But due to the club not naming itself in time before the National Challenge Cup started, they entered it as Falls River FC.
They reached the final of the Eastern Division, beating New York Galicia, 6-2.
They went onto the National Final, beating Newark Americans and impressive, 6-1, to lift the trophy.
But that was it from the New York Yankees. Sam Mark moved the club once again, as his plan to make money in New York failed. He relocated the club to Massachusetts and renamed them New Bedford Whalers.
As New York Yankees, the club did play two high-profile friendlies versus Scottish club, Celtic. They won the first game on May 30th, 1931, 4-3, at Fenway Park, whilst Celtic won the second on June 28th, 1931, at the Yankee Stadium, 4-1.
Has there ever been a name cross over like this anywhere else in the world? Perhaps a cricket club named Liverpool or a rugby side named Man United?
Bill McPherson and Sam Mark are long overdue for the veterans and builder category respectfully. I hope to see both in some day. I'd be there in a heartbeat to represent Fall River and pay respect to genuine greats of their time, hopefully one day soon!
The National Soccer Hall of Fame has announced the eligible candidates in the Player, Veteran, and Builder categories for the Class of 2025.
