It shows plug-in #EV share of new passenger-car sales/registrations around August 2026, counting BEVs + PHEVs/EREVs.

The remarkable thing isn’t Norway approaching 100%. It’s who else is on the list.

Nepal is at 72.1% of new four-wheeler imports in its latest monthly window. Singapore is at 69.6% plug-in. China, the world’s largest car market, has reached 65.2% NEV retail share. Uruguay hit 56.1% plug-in in August.

Different continents. Different incomes. Different grids. Different governments. Same technological S-curve. For years the response to Norway was: Norway is special. Too rich. Too subsidised. Too small. Too Nordic.

But Nepal isn’t Norway. Uruguay isn’t Norway. China certainly isn’t Norway. The technology and economics that drove the first EV markets are now spreading globally.

And there’s another potential accelerant: energy security. The Strait of Hormuz is a spectacular illustration of why.

Around 20 million barrels of oil and petroleum products pass through Hormuz every day, equivalent to roughly 20% of global petroleum liquids consumption and more than a quarter of global seaborne oil trade. There are few alternatives capable of replacing that flow if it is seriously disrupted.

That’s an extraordinary vulnerability built into the global transport system. An EV can ultimately run on electricity produced domestically from solar, wind, hydro, nuclear, storage, or whatever combination a country chooses.

A petrol or diesel vehicle needs a continuous supply of oil, much of it traded internationally through geopolitical chokepoints.

Hormuz could accelerate the transition if disruption produces sustained higher or more volatile oil prices.

It won’t magically replace a billion combustion vehicles. But it could improve the relative economics of electrification while giving governments another reason to reduce their dependence on imported oil.

Technology was already pushing. Economics was already pulling. Energy security could now push even harder. Norway showed where the curve can go.

Nepal, China, Singapore and Uruguay show that this is no longer a Nordic phenomenon.

The real question isn’t whether every country follows Norway at the same speed. It’s which country suddenly races up the S-curve next. ⚡🔋🌍
